Retiring in 2027? Your exact date decides when your FERS annuity starts and whether you get your last leave accrual. Here are the best FERS dates for 2027, and why Dec 31 might not be one of them.

Quick facts: Two rules decide your date. Retire at the end of a pay period so your last leave accrual gets credited, and near the end of a month because your FERS annuity starts the 1st of the next month. Best FERS dates in 2027: Saturday, Oct 30, when the pay period and the month line up (work through Friday, Oct 29; your annuity begins Monday, Nov 1). Friday, Apr 30 leaves no gap before your annuity, but you give up the last accrual. Saturday, May 29 ends a pay period but costs you the Memorial Day holiday. Dec 31, 2027 starts your annuity Jan 1, but your last day is the New Year's holiday. The other option is Jan 8, 2028, when the leave year ends: your full annual leave is paid at 2028 rates, and your annuity starts Feb 1. Pick your date on purpose, not by default.
